GOP-led House votes to formalize impeachment inquiry into President Biden

The House has approved a resolution to formalize an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. The vote was along party lines, 221 to 212.

Republicans on the House Rules Committee, which approved advancing the resolution Tuesday, argued the move was in response to stonewalling by the Biden administration to hand over documents.

The vote comes as the president’s son, Hunter Biden, defied the Republican investigator’s subpoena for closed-door testimony Wednesday. He reiterated he is willing to testify publicly as part of the GOP-led investigation. Republicans said they will initiate contempt proceedings against him for not appearing for the deposition.

Up until this point, House Republicans did not have enough support for a full vote amid their ongoing inquiry Ty into whether the president has committed an impeachable offense in connection to his family’s foreign business dealings — but House Speaker Mike Johnson said they now had enough votes. The probe has struggled to uncover wrongdoing as the White House has continued to deny the GOP accusations.
