The Factories Corporation of Jamaica (FCJ) says it has had to acquire additional land to facilitate more commercial spaces at the Morant Bay Urban Centre in St. Thomas.
Managing Director at the FCJ, Dr. Donald Farquharson, says the demand for space has been exponential.
“At this moment, we have over 150 per cent demand for the space here. That’s over 70 potential clients. So the issue of demand is so high that we have purchased an additional 10 acres next door, which we expect to do phase two. So, at this point, the issue is really not clients.”
He said the board of FCJ has also decided to designate 20 per cent of the 436,000 square feet centre for businesses indigenous to St. Thomas.
Additionally, Mr. Farquharson noted that special accommodation will be made for small and medium sized businesses in the parish, with the development of a community micro business park to be established on three acres of the additional land purchased.
