The Ukrainian Defence Ministry revealed this on Sunday, with regional governors reporting some damage but no casualties from the attack.

In a post on its Telegram, the ministry said 125 Ukrainian fixed-wing UAVs were destroyed and intercepted by air defence systems on duty.

It said that sixty-seven were destroyed over the Volgograd region in southern Russia, where governor Andrey Bocharov said falling debris from the drones sparked grass fires but no casualties or damage.

The ministry added that another 17 were downed over the Belgorod region and 17 over the Voronezh region, where governor Aleksandr Gusev said several fell on Voronezh city and its suburbs causing fires in two residential buildings but no casualties.

Governor Vasily Golubev said on Telegram that another 18 drones were destroyed over the Rostov region.

According to operational information, there are no casualties or damage on the ground.

Russia has recently announced shooting down Ukrainian drones almost daily in response to what Kyiv says are retaliatory strikes for Russian attacks during its offensive launched in February 2022

The President and Chief Executive of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, has called on the Federal Government to end fuel subsidies completely.

He said the removal would help determine the actual petrol consumption in the country, as he confirmed ownership of two oil blocks in the upstream sector with an expected production date of next month.

Dangote also stated that fuel production from his $20bn mega refinery in Lagos will help ease pressures on the naira. The refinery can refine 650,000 barrels of crude oil daily.

Speaking in a 26-minute interview with Bloomberg Television in New York on Monday, monitored by our correspondent, Dangote said now is the right time to end fuel subsidies.

“Some say, it’s less. But right now, if you look at it by us producing, everything can be counted. So everything can be accounted for, particularly for most of the trucks or ships that will come to load from us. We are going to put a tracker on them to be sure they are going to take the oil within Nigeria, and that, I think, can help the government save quite a lot of money. I think it is the right time, you know, to remove the subsidy.”

Dangote who recalled the challenges faced after the project’s launch in 2013, experiencing a five-year delay due to issues with state government and host communities and a running loan of $2.4bn, said he is personally proud to achieve the feat.

On whether the subsidy will make the refinery viable, Dangote said, “Well, you see, we have a choice of either one. We produce, we export, and when we produce, we sell locally. But we are a big private company. And yes, it’s true, we have to make a profit. We build something worth $20bn so definitely we have to make money.

“The removal of subsidies is totally dependent on the government, not on us. We cannot change the price, but I think the government will have to give up something for something. So I think at the end of the day, this subsidy will have to go.”

President Bola Tinubu removed the subsidy when he took office in May 2023, exacerbating a cost-of-living crisis that sparked protests, but quickly reinstated it as inflation spiked.

Another step to ending it was taken in early September when the gasoline cap was eased — though the price remains below the market level.

Nigeria, until Dangote’s refinery came on stream was fully dependent on imported petroleum products, and has been taking tentative moves to finally end the nation’s pricey fuel subsidies, which in 2022 cost $10bn.

The President and Chief Executive of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, has expressed his regret for not buying Arsenal when his interest lies with owning a football club.

He said he wished he had bought the English side club when the team was valued at around $2 billion.

Speaking in an interview with Bloomberg’s Francine Lacqua in New York, the billionaire business mogul explained that he missed out on buying Arsenal by committing his resources to the refinery project.

He said, “I think that time has passed. The last time when we had this interview, I told you as soon as I finish with the refinery, I am going to try and buy Arsenal.

“But you know everything has gone up and the club too is doing very well, Arsenal is doing extremely well right now. That time Arsenal wasn’t doing well.

“But you know everything has gone up and the club too is doing very well, Arsenal is doing extremely well right now. That time Arsenal wasn’t doing well.

“I think I don’t have that kind of excess liquidity to go and buy a club for $4 billion so to speak and use it as a promotional something.

“But what I will do is to continually be the biggest fan of Arsenal. I watch their games anytime they are playing. So, I will remain a major supporter of Arsenal but I don’t think it makes sense today to buy Arsenal.’

When asked if he regretted not buying when Arsenal’s value was lower, he said, “Actually, I regret not buying it before but you know my money was more needed in completing my project (Dangote refinery) than buying Arsenal. I would have bought the club for $2 billion but you know I wouldn’t have been able to finish my project. So, It was either I finish my project or go and buy Arsenal.”

Dangote had in 2020 made known his intention to go for the North London club after his refinery project.

The richest man in Africa, who has now rested his ambition to take over at Emirates Stadium, founded the Dangote Group — the largest conglomerate in West Africa — in 1981.

Traders of Africa, AliExpress, and MoMo have announced a strategic partnership aimed at transforming Nigeria’s e-commerce landscape by providing access to global products with secure local payment options and efficient delivery services.

The partnership, unveiled during a press conference in Lagos, aims to offer consumers a seamless shopping experience, featuring competitive prices, exclusive discounts, and fast shipping.

According to a statement on Monday, the collaboration will also empower local entrepreneurs and boost economic development through enhanced digital infrastructure.

The Chief Executive Officer of TOFA, Uju Uzo-Ojinaka, stated, “We are thrilled to bridge the gap between Nigerian consumers and global markets. Seven years ago, we set out to create an ‘Alibaba for Africa.’ Now, with AliExpress, Speedaf, and MTN MoMo, we have made that vision a reality.

“People can now buy not only African products but also over 200 million items available on AliExpress. This partnership ensures easy payment in local currency through MoMo and reliable delivery with Speedaf.”

The integration with MTN MoMo allows customers to make transactions in Nigerian Naira, while Speedaf, a logistics provider, will manage deliveries to customers’ specific addresses across the country.

“Speedaf is also a partner with AliExpress, ensuring that products purchased by Nigerians are delivered promptly and efficiently,” Uzo-Ojinaka added.

One person has been confirmed dead and seven others are missing following torrential rains that triggered floods and landslides in Japan’s coastal Ishikawa region.

The region, still recovering from a devastating New Year’s Day earthquake, has been hit by what officials describe as “unprecedented” rainfall.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued its highest-level “life-threatening” alert for Ishikawa on Saturday, warning that the heavy downpour would continue until midday on Sunday.

More than 40,000 residents across four cities have been ordered to evacuate as at least a dozen rivers in the area have overflowed.

Among the missing are two people reportedly swept away by strong river currents, according to Japan’s public broadcaster NHK. Additionally, four workers repairing roads damaged in the January earthquake are unaccounted for after being caught in a landslide on Saturday morning.

Wajima, one of the hardest-hit cities, recorded more than 120mm (4.7 inches) of rainfall—the heaviest downpour since records began. Streets in Wajima were shown completely submerged in footage broadcast by NHK.

JMA forecaster Sugimoto Satoshi stated the gravity of the situation, saying, “This level of downpours has never been experienced in this region before. Residents must secure their safety immediately. The risk to their lives is imminent.”

Koji Yamamoto, a local government official, reported that 60 workers had been repairing a road damaged in Wajima when a landslide struck.

“I asked [contractors] to check the safety of workers… but we are still unable to contact four people,” he told AFP, adding that rescue workers attempting to reach the site were blocked by further landslides.

The storms have also caused widespread power outages, leaving some 6,000 households without electricity and an unknown number without running water.

Two people have sustained serious injuries, and evacuation orders have been issued to 44,000 residents in Ishikawa, with an additional 16,000 people advised to evacuate in the neighboring Niigata and Yamagata prefectures.

The region, located on Honshu island’s Noto Peninsula, was also hit hard by a 7.5 magnitude earthquake on New Year’s Day, which killed 236 people.

The quake had left behind significant damage, including toppled buildings and destroyed infrastructure. Recovery efforts from the earthquake were still underway when the unprecedented rains hit.

Japan has experienced increasingly severe weather in recent years, with floods and landslides becoming more frequent and sometimes resulting in casualties.
