Organised labour commences its nationwide strike over the minimum wage today, Monday, June 3, following the failed attempt by the National Assembly leadership and federal government representatives to stop it.

Arising from the above, the Tripartite Committee is to meet every day for the next one week with a view to arriving at an agreeable National Minimum Wage
Labour, in deference to the high esteem of the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s commitment in (ii) above undertakes to convene a meeting of its organs immediately to consider this commitment
No worker would be victimized as a result of the industrial action.

NLC, FG meeting on new minimum wage endThe meeting between the organised labour and the federal government on the new minimum wage has come to an end.
Muhammed Idris, the minister of information and national orientation, said the government had reached a reasonable conclusion with the unions.
The NLC and TUC leadership have agreed to meet with their organs and fine-tune a way forward.

According to TVC News, journalists are waiting to be briefed on the outcome of the meeting.
“Why Soldiers Seen At NLC, FG Negotiation Venue”, Army Opens UpThe Nigeria Army has dismissed the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) claim that it has mobilised soldiers to the venue of the negotiation between it and the federal government.
The military said the presence of soldiers at the venue was not to intimidate anyone but because they escorted the national security adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, who will also be attending the meeting.
According to the military, there was no plan to intimidate the leadership of the organised labour as speculated by the NLC.

NLC raises alarm over soldiers’ presence at negotiation venueThe NLC has raised concerns over the heavy presence of military personnel at the SGF’s office, which is scheduled for negotiation between it and the federal government.
Organised labour was invited to the office of the SGF for negotiation over the ongoing industrial action embarked upon by the worker.
They threatened to worsen the situation should the leadership of the unions be intimidated by the presence of the military officer.

NLC, TUC leaders arrive presidential villaThe federal government and leadership of the organised labour have reportedly set to commence another meeting over the ongoing strike of the union.
According to The Punch, organised labour leaders reportedly arrived at the office of the secretary to the government of the federation to resume negotiation with government representatives.
This came after the unions have shut down workplaces across the country, demanding for an increase in the minimum wage.

MURIC attacks labour union leadersAn Islamic human rights organisation, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has cautioned the NLC and the TUC that the current indefinite nationwide strike “will make life unbearable for Muslims”.
MURIC, in a statement signed by Professor Ishaq Akintola, its director, obtained by Legit.ng, said the strike would negatively affect Muslims preparing for the Eid el-Kabir.

FG threatens workersThe federal government has warned workers planning to join the indefinite strike declared by labour unions that they risk a six-month jail term.
The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), gave the warning in a statement on Sunday, June 2.

NLC/TUC: Airports to be groundedThe aviation unions in Nigeria have announced their intention to join the nationwide indefinite strike directed by labour unions.

NLC/TUC: Nationwide blackoutThe Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has informed the public that the labour union has shut down the national grid, resulting in a blackout throughout the country.
Legit.ng learnt that the national grid shutdown occurred at about 2:19 am on Monday, June 3, 2024.
