Reduce your salaries to minimum wage, Ex-NLC treasurer tells federal lawmakers

Ikeja, Lagos state – A former treasurer of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Bamgbose Betty, has dared the Nigerian Senate to put their salaries on the minimum wage scale to understand the plights of labour unions.

Bamgbose said she is dissatisfied with how the federal government is handling the minimum wage negotiations.

Speaking at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), she said:

“For them to know where it pains us, let the senate, whatever, put their salary on this minimum wage too and let’s see what will happen. I mean, let it go round.”She said the labour unions and the federal government have been deliberating on the new minimum wage for so long, stating that enough is enough.

Bamgbose lamented the struggles workers faced regarding the economic realities in the country.

“When you get paid within two to three days, the salary is nowhere to be found…the suffering is too much,” Legit.ng earlier reported that the federal government reached out to organised labour to continue negotiations with the Tripartite Committee.

The minister of information and national orientation, Mohammed Idris, said labour must recognise that minimum wage also involves the private sector.

Labour union cuts water supply to national assembly Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that members of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), an affiliate of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), had cut water supply to the national assembly.

In compliance with the indefinite strike declared by the organised labour, the national assembly complex was shut with the entrance and exit gates blocked.

Legit.ng reports that this follows labour’s insistence on strike following their refusal to accept the Bola Tinubu-led government’s offer of N60,000 minimum wage.
