3 teens to be charged with autistic man’s murder

The Di­rec­tor of Pub­lic Pros­e­cu­tions (DPP) has ad­vised that three teenagers be charged in con­nec­tion with the mur­der of Kyn­plyn Sandy, a 34-year-old autis­tic man who was fa­tal­ly shot on March 25, 2024.

In an of­fi­cial state­ment, the Po­lice Ser­vice notes the charges rec­om­mend­ed by DPP Roger Gas­pard in­clude Mur­der, Pos­ses­sion of Firearm and Pos­ses­sion of Am­mu­ni­tion.

The three sus­pects are said to be 17, 18 and 19 years of age.

Sandy, of Bam­boo Trace, Fair­ley Street, Tu­na­puna, was shot dead by a gun­man as he sat out­side his house.

Ac­cord­ing to po­lice re­ports, around 4:50 pm on Mon­day 25 March 2024, of­fi­cers re­ceived in­for­ma­tion that led them to Up­per Fair­ley Street, Bam­boo Road, Tu­na­puna.  There, the of­fi­cers dis­cov­ered a male of African de­scent ly­ing mo­tion­less on his back un­der­neath a con­crete and wood­en struc­ture, with what ap­peared to be a gun­shot a wound to his head.

At his fu­ner­al ser­vice, Kyn­plyn Sandy was de­scribed by fam­i­ly and friends as “a joy­ful pres­ence”, who showed an “over-pro­tec­tive­ness and lov­ing na­ture to­wards his sib­lings”.

Sandy’s el­der sis­ter, Oni­ka McKen­zie, said her broth­er’s autism did not stop him from be­ing a com­pas­sion­ate per­son and hav­ing a love for life.
